The Pros and Cons between buying a New vs Used IPL Laser

January 8, 2017

Beginning in the 1980s, cosmetic treatments began to gain traction and since that point cosmetic lasers and other types of technology devoted to cosmetic treatments have become very popular.

The appeal of new or used cosmetic lasers is that they can perform procedures that previously were only done on surgical tables. These days, anyone can have cosmetic laser procedures, such as laser hair removal or skin rejuvenation done in a spa setting. The fact that cosmetic IPL laser treatments are non-invasive is a big draw to many people and there are very little side effects and almost no time is required to recover after most procedures. That is the part of the business that makes IPL lasers such a major money maker. So, adding a new or used laser machine to your spa or related business is a great investment.

In fact, in Canada there was an 8% dollar growth in the 1.4 Billion Dollar

Beauty Industry, which exceeded the U.S. By 5%.

Consider your demographics:

One of the first things to think about when choosing to buy a new or used IPL laser machine is your demographics. How old are your clients, what type of treatments are they interested in? Certain laser devices are only meant to treat a few, specific skin types and conditions. So, it’s important to pick a laser that will meet the needs of your business.

Should you buy a new or used IPL laser?

The decision to buy new or used isn’t one you should make in a hurry. First you really need to think about which options would benefit your business the most. Modern IPL lasers can offer a very wide variety of treatments beyond just Hair Removal such as;

  • Hair Removal

  • Foliculitis (ingrown hair)

  • Fine Line Reduction

  • Pigmentation Uniformity

  • Freckle Removal

  • Age Spot Reduction

  • Rosecea

  • Scar Reduction

  • Acne Reduction

  • Skin Tightening

  • Wrinkle Reduction

  • Varicose Vein Reduction

  • Spider Vein Reduction

As you can see, there are an enormous variety of treatments that you can offer your clients to really cater to their specialized needs.

On the other hand, used aesthetic laser do cost less. Some models that are not too old, offer some of the features of a new laser, so it really depends on your budget constraints, the range of treatments you wish to offer your clients and the business image you want to project.

According to the National Laser Institute, the average price of a new laser is between $50,000 US and $250,000 US which makes it a significant investment for your business.

Additional Benefits and Costs

Some laser manufacturers offer additional marketing and business support, as well as initial training and certification. If these services are offered free of charge, this can represent a significant business savings. The owner selling a used device could spend an hour or two with you to show you how to operate the equipment and demonstrate how to use the common features and if you are an experienced laser operator this may very well suffice to get started.

Buyer Beware

Another import consideration is that new cosmetic IPL lasers bought from a reputable company are carefully inspected and certified by Health Canada as well as fully guaranteed. New laser manufacturers should have service centres close to your place of business so that you don't loose business for a prolonged period of time if your device should require maintenance. When buying used, it is difficult to gauge the condition of the machine and how carefully it was treated during is operation. If there is a problem, you will not be able to return the device and could lose your investment.

The National Laser Institute reports that a single repair cost is approximately $5000 US and this doesn’t take into account any shipping or customs fees that may be incurred depending on where the device will be serviced.

So, you always need to keep the old ‘buyer beware’ adage in mind when thinking about purchasing a used aesthetic laser.
