Busting laser hair removal myths with Dr. Gloria Octaviano

September 30, 2017

The pros and cons of laser hair removal are hot topics across the world wide web, but it can be difficult to decipher between the truth and myths. Nubody Equipment speaks to Dr. Gloria Octaviano, founding partner of Melanin Aesthetics and Laser Clinic in Surrey, B.C. to find out the facts behind laser hair removal.

The Myth: Laser hair removal has not been proven safe.

The Truth: Laser and light based technology for laser hair removal have been proven safe and effective. Extensive research has been made since 1960’s through 1990’s to improve its use and functionality. Today, laser hair removal is one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures. According to the American Academy for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, laser hair removal was the third most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedure in 2012 after Botox and fillers. A word of caution though, make sure to use a Health Canada approved device.

It’s important to ask your laser technician what type of laser is being used because some clinics may be using cheaper lasers that are not approved by Health Canada. As long as your clinic is using a laser that has been determined safe, you have nothing to worry about.

The Myth: Laser hair removal can actually cause more hair to grow.

The Truth: Laser hair removal does not cause hair growth as long as the technician has a good understanding of the client’s skin type and the correct laser parameter. Additionally, some conditions may increase hair growth while doing laser treatment such as hormones, medications and underlying medical conditions so all these things should be taken into consideration.

The Myth: Laser hair removal works the same for all hair types.

The Truth: Laser hair removal varies depending on the color and thickness of the hair. Remember that laser and light based technology targets the pigment on the hair called MELANIN therefore any hair with at least some pigment can be effectively treated.

The Myth: Laser hair removal exposes you to radiation.

The Truth: Laser and light based technology uses light and heat to target pigments. It does not expose clients to radiation.

The Myth: Permanent hair removal can be completed in one long session.

The Truth: Laser hair removal cannot be completed in one session. The time it takes to complete a full hair growth cycle varies from person to person and the location of the hair on the body, but is typically 18-24 months. At any given moment the majority of the hair follicles in any skin area are in the resting stages. These resting hairs cannot be affected by laser/light. However hairs in the growing Anagen phase will respond to treatments. It is important to understand that it may take a full hair growth cycle to realize complete results when doing combined-energy based hair removal.

Things to know before committing to laser

First of all, one should certainly seek out a consultation from a reputable clinic before engaging in any laser sessions. Find out if the lasers being used are approved by Health Canada and ask the technician what type of results someone with your hair and skin colour can expect. If you take any medications, mention this to your consulting technician because some medications cannot be combined with laser treatment.
